AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Deaths in Travis County related to February's historic winter storm have more than doubled, according to the latest update from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

DSHS updated its count of deaths connected to the winter storm on Tuesday, the latest update to the numbers since May. A death is considered to be related to the storm if a medical certifier has submitted a DSHS form or flagged a death record as disaster-related, or if DSHS epidemiologists match a public report of a disaster-related death to a death certificate.

According to the data, 28 people in Travis County died from causes related to the storm, up from a count of 12 in May.

Most of the reported deaths are due to hypothermia, while other causes include car crashes due to wintry precipitation, carbon monoxide poisoning, complications due to chronic illnesses, trauma from falls, and fire.

Williamson County added one additional death, for a total of four. Hays, Caldwell, and Bastrop Counties reported no storm-related deaths, according to the state data.

Harris County leads the state with 44 storm-related deaths.
