Former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger's request for parole has been denied. Guyger's appeal to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles was rejected.
She became eligible for parole last month. The Dallas Morning News reports more than 6,000 people signed an online petition urging parole officials to reject her request.
In September 2018, Amber Guyger entered Botham Jean's apartment in Dallas' Cedars neighborhood, mistakenly believing it was her own. She said she thought Jean was an intruder and shot him.
Jean, a 26-year-old accountant, was unarmed and in his own home. A Dallas County jury found Guyger guilty of murder and sentenced her to 10 years in prison. The case drew national attention.
Guyger's parole eligibility came on what would have been Jean's 33rd birthday. Jean's family has been vocal in their desire for Guyger to serve her full sentence.
