Report: North Texas area a front-runner for Amazon backed electric car factory

Rivian Automotive, Inc., reportedly is looking closely at Fort Worth to build a $5 billion electric vehicle factory.

Rivian is a startup company backed by Amazon.  As first reported by Bloomberg News, the plant - code name "Project Tera" - aims to produce 200,000 vehicles a year and employ at least 7,500 workers by 2027.

Bloomberg Automotive Correspondent Ed Ludlow told KRLD local officials are offering grants and incentives worth up to $440 million to lure the plant to North Texas.  Reports said the proposed site is a 2,000-acre tract in the Walsh Ranch development, 12 miles southwest of downtown Fort Worth.

Rivian is said to have a deal to build 100,000 electric delivery vans for Amazon by the end of the decade.

Ludlow said other locations outside Texas remain in the running for the Rivian factory.  A final decision could come in a matter of weeks, and sources tell Ludlow Fort Worth is considered the front-runner.  He spoke with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
