AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Texas State Representative Gina Hinojosa (D-Austin) officially announced her 2026 gubernatorial bid on Wednesday, setting the stage for a major challenge against incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
Hinojosa, a five-term Democratic lawmaker and one of the Legislature's fiercest critics of Abbott's school voucher program, framed her campaign as a fight against corporate interests.
"Our fight right now is against the billionaires and corporations who are driving up prices, closing our neighborhood schools and cheating Texans out of basic health care," Hinojosa stated in a campaign launch video. "That’s who Greg Abbott works for. I’m running for governor to work for you."
Hinojosa joins a growing Democratic primary field that includes Houston businessman Andrew White, rancher and retired firefighter Bobby Cole, and Bay City Council member Benjamin Flores.
The ultimate nominee will face an uphill battle in the general election. Abbott ended June with over $87 million in his campaign account and has won all three previous gubernatorial races by double-digit margins.
