An FBI warning that far-right extremist groups are planning marches on state capitals has the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) on alert in Austin.
There have been reports that armed protests are expected outside the Texas State Capitol grounds on Sunday, but security is expected to remain through Wednesday’s Presidential Inauguration.
Earlier in the week DPS Director Steve McCraw is said to have briefed state lawmakers that they’re monitoring multiple groups, but so far no threats have been made.
On Friday DPS released the following statement:
“The Texas Department of Public Safety is continuously monitoring events and their impact on public safety. As a result, the department has deployed additional personnel and resources to the Texas State Capitol. While we do not discuss operational specifics, DPS will continue to adjust our operations as needed to maintain public order and address potential threats. The department remains committed to proactively protecting the people and property of Texas.”
