While the Dallas Cowboys continue to seek their first on-the-field title since the 1995 season, Jerry Jones has won another trophy for fiscal strength.
The newest NFL Valuations, released by Sportico on Monday, values the Cowboys franchise at $7.64 billion. That's almost $2 billion more than the second most valuable franchise, the Super Bowl champion LA Rams ($5.91 billion).
"They're one of a kind," Kurt Badenhausen, sports valuations reporter at Sportico, says of the Cowboys. "Revenue is about 50 percent higher than anyone else in the league. Jerry (Jones) has been doing this a long time, and has really maximized the brand and taken the brand beyond football."
The New England Patriots ($5.88 billion) fell one spot to third in the valuations. The Giants ($5.73 billion) and Jets ($5.18 billion) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Badenhausen says the biggest impact on the numbers this year was the sale of the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion. The sale price is, by far, the highest price ever paid for an NFL team.
Badenhausen adds that the Cowboys franchise is starting to run into a ceiling of maximizing its value.
"There's really very few people on the planet who could afford something valued at $7 or $8 billion," he said.
Jerry Jones famously commented this offseason that while he'd never sell, he believes the starting price for selling the franchise would be $10 billion.
