The company planning a high-speed rail line between Dallas and Houston hires a contractor for one of the biggest parts of the project.
Texas Central has signed a $1.6 billion deal with a company called Kiewit Infrastructure and one of its affiliates to install the core electrical systems for the high-speed train. Those include traction power, signaling and communications equipment.
The companies have experience in dealing with complex and large-scale electric systems.
Texas Central predicts the construction project will take six years and create 17,000 jobs.
Several landowners along the proposed route have opposed the project. A group representing property owners in six counties sued two federal agencies last month calling for them to block the project.
