A Robb Elementary School teacher who was wounded during the May 24, 2022 school shooting testified Tuesday in the criminal trial of a former Uvalde school police officer accused of failing to act during the attack that killed 19 students and two teachers.

Elsa Avila told jurors she was taking photos of her fourth-grade class when shots rang out in the hallway, and she was hit as she began lockdown procedures.

Avila’s account was part of ongoing testimony in the trial of ex-Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police officer Adrian Gonzales, who faces 29 counts of child endangerment for his response to the massacre.

Prosecutors allege Gonzales’ actions contributed to a delayed law enforcement response during the 77-minute attack; Gonzales has pleaded not guilty and his defense says he acted under chaotic conditions.
