Victims of Texas winter storms get deadline extensions, other tax relief from the IRS

Income tax return

WASHINGTON (Talk1370.com) -- Taxpayers in Texas affected by the severe winter weather will have extra time to file this year's tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service announced Monday.

The agency's relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines for the disaster period, beginning on Feb. 11. Affected individuals and businesses will have until June 15 to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due, including the 2020 individual and business returns normally due on April 15 and various business returns that were due on March 15.

Affected taxpayers will also have until June 15 to make 2020 IRA contributions.

The extended deadline also applies to quarterly estimated income tax payments due on April 15, quarterly payroll and excise tax returns due on April 30, and tax-exempt organizations, operating on a calendar-year basis, that have a 2020 return due on May 17.

In addition, penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after February 11 and before February 26 will be abated as long as the deposits are made by February 26.
