HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- An MRI revealed Astros All-Star slugger Yordan Alvarez suffered a sprained right knee and will miss the team's series against the Seattle Mariners, manager Joe Espada announced after Monday's 6-1 loss.
Alvarez suffered the injury in the third of Sunday's 9-8 loss to the Los Angeles Angels sliding into second base after hitting a double. Espada said Alvarez woke up sore Monday morning after x-rays on Sunday revealed inflammation in the knee.
Espada said he hopes Alvarez will be able during the Astros final series of the regular season in Cleveland this weekend, and while he considered Monday's diagnosis to be positive news, he hoped it would be better.
"If there's a chance for him to come back in the regular season, it's good news," Espada said. "It's just, I hope it would have been just one game, but that's not the case."
Without Alvarez, the Astros managed just four hits Monday night against the Mariners, and were held to two hits over seven scoreless innings by Seattle starter Bryce Miller.
Named to his third consecutive American League All-Star team, Alvarez is the Astros team leader in batting average (.305), home runs (35), and RBI (86) this season, while playing in a career-high 147 games.
