Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said the organization wouldn't go out and sign another kicker following Brett Maher's struggles in the Wild Card game against the Buccaneers. He repeated that message during his press conference on Tuesday.
But, sometimes, actions speak louder than words, and in this instance, the response from the Cowboys was clear: They are concerned about their kicker.
Dallas went out and signed free agent kicker Tristan Vizcaino to their practice squad on Wednesday to give themselves some insurance in case Maher doesn't display in practices this week that he has gotten over the yips or whatever caused him to miss four extra points on Monday.
Despite the team's decision to bring in another kicker, McCarthy said during his visit with the media Thursday that he still has faith that his kicker will get the job done.
"In doesn't take anything away in our trust in Brett. I just think it's part of the responsibility," McCarthy said at the team's headquarters at The Star. "Player acquisition is a 365-day (a year process). This is nothing out of the norm for us. I haven't had a chance to watch Tristan. I'm looking forward to seeing him work today. I think he's a talented young kicker. We just want to make sure we're in position to always add depth to our football team."
