(KCBS AM) — Bay Area-based 24 Hour Fitness is applying for bankruptcy and closing more than a hundred gyms. But do fitness industry experts expect this to be the beginning of a trend?
Meredith Poplar is with URSA (IHRSA), the health club trade association, and she told KCBS Radio that this has been a very hard time for clubs and gyms.
Poplar does add that it does depend on the clubs' ability to get financial assistance.
"Unless they get financial relief from Congress or from their landlords and so forth, we estimate that there will be a substantial number of clubs that will close," she said. "However, most of the ones that we have spoken to are confident that they will be able to remain open."
Success at a time like this may partially rely on your size, said Josh Levy, the Founder and CEO of the Association of Fitness Studios.
"The 'big box' facilities, as we like to call them, are going to have a much harder time, in our opinion, bouncing back than the fitness studios," he said. "And that's mainly because of the physical footprint that they have and all the processes they have to implement to keep their members safe."
Levy said that promising members a safe and sanitary environment is what will not only bring members back, but also attract new ones. He added that a gym's ability to pivot and monetize online classes will also be key.
"Online virtual training is here to stay and it's going to be here to stay for a long, long time," Levy said.
