Trent Williams Ends Holdout, Signs Extension with 49ers, Boosting San Francisco's Chances in Week 1 Against the Jets

The 49ers lock in All-Pro LT Trent Williams with a new deal, dramatically improving their outlook for the Week 1 clash with the Jets and for San Francisco’s entire season

Per The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini, left tackle Trent Williams has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, thus ending his holdout.

After a tumultuous offseason, the team has now inked their All-Pro LT just days after agreeing to an extension with star wideout Brandon Aiyuk.

Bringing back Ayiuk was important, but keeping Williams happy was essential for the Niners.

As Scott Barrett of Fantasy Points pointed out on X, Williams is perhaps the most valuable non-quarterback in the NFL. In 2023 without Williams healthy, 49ers QB Brock Purdy threw 28 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions. With Williams out or off the field due to injury (Weeks 6, 7, 8 and 16), Purdy threw three touchdowns and nine interceptions. Not only that, but Christian McCaffrey’s average yards before contact fell from 2.30 to 1.83 in that same situation.

Rich Hribar of Sharp Football Analysis further reported that with Williams off the field, Purdy’s dropbacks resulted in getting pressured 44.9% of the time, sacked 6.1% of the time and intercepted 5.2% of the time with a 2.6% touchdown rate. With Williams on the field, Purdy’s dropbacks resulted in getting pressured 39.8% of the time, sacked 5.4% of the time and intercepted 1.7% of the time with a 6.7% touchdown rate.

Translation? Williams is an absolute beast and the one-man wrecking crew now has a chance to play on Monday Night Football against the Jets, which boosts his team’s chances of a Week 1 victory.

I was considering a bet on New York’s moneyline (+165 at BetMGM) if Williams was out, but now that he’s back and seemingly going to be ready to suit up in Week 1, the 49ers to cover (-4) is certainly in play.
