Before Week 2 of the college football season kicked off on Saturday, the Texas Longhorns were +850 to win the College Football Championship, which was third on pretty much every odds board behind Georgia and Ohio State. While their spot didn’t change in those rankings, they moved considerably closer to the two big dogs in the pack after their demolition of defending champion Michigan on Saturday.

The Longhorns were the #3 ranked team in the country, and they played like it, crushing the Wolverines 31-12 in a game that really wasn’t as close as even that score indicates. Michigan scored a touchdown in garbage time. After the win, Texas moved from +850 to +550 to win the championship, behind Georgia (+275) and Ohio State (+375). Oregon is behind them by a decent margin at 10/1 odds in fourth place.

QB Quinn Ewers was outstanding, and is now the favorite in the market as well to win the Heisman Trophy after that game. He was 12/1 last week, and had his odds cut in half, moving to just 6/1 after Week 2.

Many think that Texas should be considered the favorite to win the championship after their performance at the big house, but in my humble opinion, that is simply not reality. I’m not sure anyone really believed that Michigan was a Top 10 team in the country coming into this season after losing head coach Jim Harbaugh and QB J.J. McCarthy in the offseason to the NFL, in addition to half of their roster.

Georgia crushed a Clemson team in Week 1 that just put up 66 points this week, albeit against Appalachian State, and should not leave the No. 1 spot until they give a real reason to have that happen. Ohio State has had two cupcake games to start their year against Akron and Western Michigan, which is why Texas is now ranked ahead of them at #2 in the latest rankings, but still should probably be favored over the Longhorns for now.

I like Texas, don’t get me wrong, they are a great team with a ton of talent. I just think we need to hit the brakes here on them being the best team in the country. Beating a depleted Michigan team is not beating Georgia or Ohio State. They will have to face the Bulldogs on October 19, so then we will see just how good this Longhorns team truly is.
