Second-ranked Michigan looked every bit the part as the Wolverines excelled through the air and on the ground.
Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy continued his hot start as he completed his first 12 throws and was 22-of-25 passing with a couple of touchdowns. the accurate righty is 48-of-55 through two games. He guided the Wolverines on scoring drives of 80, 75, 83, 64, and 76 yards. Roman Wilson scored twice on receptions for a second week, and Blake Corum rushed for 80 yards and three touchdowns.
UNLV's (1-1) on score was late in the game with 2:43 remaining in the game as Jordan Younge-Humprey rushed for a 20 yard TD. Younge-Humphrey has three career touchdowns, two versus Notre Dame last year play the score against the Wolverines.
Michigan's defense also dominated the game. Rebel QB Doug Brumfield was under duress most of the day. He was sacked five times by the Wolverines defense. Brumfield was 10-for-19 throwing for 100 yards. He rushed the football 10 times for minus yardage. UNLV rushed for just 61 yards.
The Rebels Jacob De Jesus had another solid performance with five receptions for 46 yards and two punt returns for 24 yards.
The UNLV defense stayed primarily in zone coverage and McCarthy picked apart the Rebels for 313 yards through the air. There were some bright spots for the defense, including a fourth-down stop for a second week, and an INT by senior LB Jerrae Williams. Cam Oliver and Marsel McDuffie led UNLV with nine tackles apiece.
UNLV Head Coach Barry Odom said he isn't discouraged by the loss to powerhouse Michigan. "I'm excited about where we're going to go with this and I'm excited about the resolve of our players on how we're going to respond," he said.
UNLV hosts Vanderbilt (2-1) of the SEC next Saturday at Allegiant Stadium at 4pm.
