The biggest game of this upcoming weekend in college football is certainly going to be Georgia vs. Alabama, and it could be the game of the year. These two powerhouses have had some of the most electric battles over the many years they have been the dominant forces in the sport, and this one should be no different.
The game is lined as such as well, with the Bulldogs being a very small -2 favorite at most sportsbooks right now. This opened with them being a -2.5 favorite, so some Alabama money has come in, which isn’t shocking at all, considering how these teams have played most recently.
Georgia is the No. 2 team in the country, but they were No. 1 before their last game. While they didn’t lose that game against an unranked Kentucky team on the road, they surely came close. It was an uninspiring and uncharacteristic performance by this Bulldogs team that we are used to seeing crush everyone no matter where they play.
They prevailed 13-12, but it was a poor enough performance that Texas overtook them in the AP poll for the No. 1 spot. Personally, I think this was a bit of an overreaction. Every team has a bad game now and then, and Georgia managed to still come out with a win despite being outplayed. QB Carson Beck had one of his worst games, throwing for just 160 yards, but he also didn’t throw any interceptions to kill his team.
Georgia's last regular season loss came on Nov. 7, 2020 to Florida in Jacksonville. Since then, the Bulldogs have won 42 in a row during the regular season. The Bulldogs are also the only FBS team that has not allowed a TD this season.
On the other side, Alabama is coming off of a complete and total demolition of the Wisconsin Badgers on the road. The Tide were already a 17-point favorite in the game, but they easily covered that spread with a 42-10 victory. QB Jalen Milroe threw three touchdowns and rushed for two more, accounting for 5 TD’s in the game, and overall looking spectacular for Alabama.
Alabama is the last team to beat Georgia (2023 SEC Championship Game), and the last team to register a regular season home win over the Bulldogs when they did it in Tuscaloosa on Oct. 17, 2020.
There is no question who looks like the better team coming into this game, and when it comes to public perception of a team, it is always the “what have you done for me lately?” approach. I fully expect that a majority of tickets are going to be on the No. 4 Crimson Tide at home getting points after the contrasting performances a couple of weeks ago from these teams.
Both will be coming into this game after having a bye week last weekend, so both will have had plenty of time to prepare for the other. The Kirby Smart vs. Kalen DeBoer chess match is going to be something to behold, and I for one am very much looking forward to watching this game.
As always, pay attention this week to where the tickets and money go. This is going to be one of the most wagered on games of the season, so you know the books can’t afford to lose big here. I expect to be on Georgia, but we will see.
