Redskins quarterback Alex Smith has finally shed that bulky contraption known as an external fixator, news his wife revealed on Instagram Monday afternoon.

The fixator has been a fixture in the few public photos of Smith in the eight months since his gruesome Nov. 2018 leg injury. It's removal is a welcomed sign of progress for Smith, who had to undergo multiple surgeries on his broken leg, including follow-up surgeries as a result of "devastating complications" from the initial operation.

"The last 8 months have been nothing short of crazy. Although it’s not over, today is a big milestone," writes Elizabeth Smith. "We are shedding the weight Alex has been carrying (literally and figuratively). It’s one step closer to the goal. The resilience, determination and mental fortitude of this man is unmatched."
