Every Redskins field goal and extra point will come with an added degree of uncertainty for the rest of the season, as long snapper Nick Sundberg, one of the longest-tenured Redskins, heads to injured reserve.

The Redskins officially signed free agent long snapper Andrew East on Saturday, replacing Sundberg on the roster.

Admitting that this was not how he hoped the season would end, Sundberg thanked fans and explained how things went south for him:

Thank you Redskin Nation. ‘Til next year. #HTTR pic.twitter.com/gxfHHAe0C8

"Now that it's official, I'd like to share with you all the reason for this unexpected trip to the IR," he wrote. "Since last season, I've been dealing with herniated and bulging discs that have been impinging a nerve in my lower back.

"With five epidurals over the last year, I was able to fight through until this week. Unfortunately, I had an unexpected change in symptoms and have been warned that if I try to play any longer this year, I risk permanent damage and loss of mobility moving forward.

"Thankfully, the surgery we have scheduled Tuesday should fix all these issues and get me back to 100 percent before next season. Thank you all for your continued support. HTTR."

It's amazing that Sundberg has been dealing with this for more than a year. It would seem that he tried to avoid surgery to fix the issue, but it became an inevitability in recent days.

Sundberg deserves credit for being part of an effective special teams core, including snapping to punter Tress Way, who has put together a Pro Bowl season. Kicker Dustin Hopkins is also having one of his best seasons, making 87 percent of his field goals and 23-of-24 extra points.

East, his replacement, has appeared on seven NFL offseason rosters since 2015, which is not uncommon for up-and-coming specialists. He was most recently on the Memphis Express roster in the Alliance of American Football League.
