The Capitals are now 8-0-3 since New Year’s Eve, and with three games left in January, a run at being undefeated in regulation is not out of the question…assuming they don’t see any more nachos on the ice.
Wait, what? You read that right: during their game in Edmonton, goalie Logan Thompson was distracted a little bit when he faced a shot from Corey Perry after Perry skated around someone’s snack turned projectile.
“What psychotic person goes and buys $15 nachos, has the cheese and the jalapenos, and maybe a side of salsa, and then just heaves it out on the ice and wastes such a fine product?" Cakes asked.
“I didn’t even see it until like the shot was taken, and then I kinda like just like happened to see it as Draisaitl entered the zone; you catch like a glimpse of it and then it all happened so quickly,” Dowd laughed. “I just loved how guys were pointing at the nachos as if they made like a big difference in the goal. Like, I would have done the exact same thing if I was on the ice! I would have lost it and then like, hey, there's nachos out here, how are we supposed to play?”
Dowder is not a nachos guy, telling Cakes he’s brat and a beer at a baseball game, but maybe a soft pretzel inside…although it stays within the box of his seat.
“There’s a lot of ways to enjoy your food, but throwing it on the ice is not one way you enjoy it,” Dowd laughed, “although I think Chicky (Jakob Chychrun) might’ve taken a bit on the way by!”
Just another wacky moment on their longest road trip of the season, which also happens to have a huge time difference between their locales and back home.
“It’s three hours out here, so if I wake up at 8, my wife has probably lived a full day back home and it's already, 11 o'clock,” Dowd said. “I woke up the other day at like 9:30 after a game, and my wife was at home eating lunch! And you definitely gotta double check your hotel room when you leave, because you get back on the elevator after you come home from a skate or something, you're thinking to yourself, where am I? When we got to Edmonton a day early it felt like we’d been here for four or five days! We’re fortunate we stay in beautiful hotels and eat amazing food in the majority of the cities – we’re in Seattle now and we’re staying by the ocean, and it’s a beautiful view – but it definitely gets long.”
