JUNKIES: John Feinstein on NFL's latest gambling suspensions

It’s another Feinstein Friday for the Sports Junkies, and this week was an almost all-MLB edition – John joined the guys to talk All-Star starters, how disappointing the Mets have been in 2023, and Shohei Ohtani’s future!

He also weighed in on the latest NFL suspensions for gambling, and Bish wondered both how the players could be so stupid, and how could the NFL be the only league having these issues put out publicly?

“It’s a hard answer for me, but there are a lot of times people know the rules and break them anyway, because they think they won’t get caught,” Feinstein said. “I agree with you that it’s stupid to break a rule like this, and they’re likely doing it in a way that makes it easy to get caught.”

The thing is, for Feinstein, it’s a hard issue due to what he perceives as NFL hypocrisy.

“The flipside to me is that the NFL is cashing in on gambling big-time, and Goodell is turning around and banning these guys, and I have a problem with that. It’s hypocritical,” Feinstein said. “If you play in the NFL and bet on the NFL, that’s incredibly stupid, but everyone is wrong in this case. I have trouble siding with anyone on this. It’s hypocritical, but it’s classic NFL – no one does it better when it comes to standing up and saying they’re the good guys than the NFL.”

Bish noted that most of the guy who have netted suspensions, outside of Calvin Ridley, are much lesser-known in the league by most fans…and after mentioning they had talked about what if it was Patrick Mahomes on Thursday, Feinstein weighed in on a “big name” getting caught in these crosshairs.

“Mahomes is too smart to do something like that, but you’re right – it’s much easier in all sports to punish guys that aren’t well-known,” Feinstein said. “The TV networks would throw a fit if someone of Mahomes’ caliber was suspended for a season. If a big star gets caught doing this, it’s going to be different.”
