Nationals free agent outfielder Adam Eaton, 32, has reportedly agreed to a one-year $7 million contract with the Chicago White Sox, according to NBC Sports Chicago's Chuck Garfien.
The Nationals declined Eaton's $10.5 million team option, giving him a $1.5 million buyout and making him a free agent.
The move comes four years and one day after Eaton was traded to Washington from the White Sox in exchange for Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Dane Dunning.
On Tuesday, Dunning — Washington's first-round pick in 2016 — was traded, along with a prospect to be named later, to the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Lance Lynn.
Of his four seasons with the Nationals, Eaton's best came in 2019 when he suited up for 151 games, hitting 15 home runs, 49 RBI, and helped the Nats defeat the Houston Astros in the World Series, where he hit .320 with two home runs to help the franchise win its first championship.
In four seasons for Washington, Eaton hit .279 with 26 homers and 112 RBI.
While Washington had to give up a huge haul to acquire Eaton, he proved to be a vital piece of the Nationals' World Series makeup in 2019. The trade itself is one of the rare scenarios in baseball where the deal seemed to work out for both sides in the end.
