JP and Brian took a page from the Junkies Thursday, opening up the phones for an Open Line Thursday to get your thoughts on the Commanders adding Bobby Wagner.
But then they got an interesting take from a huge Seahawks fan that works in the DC media: our own Drab, Junkies producer extraordinaire, who likes the move…for Seattle?
“I think I've seen every snap of his career. I'm one of his biggest fans and what he brings to the team can obviously help these young guys grow…but on the field, as a Seahawks fan, honestly, I'd seen enough,” Drab said. “I was honestly ready to move on. That’s not to say that he can't be a piece on another team, it just wasn't working with him on our defense. It was a disaster. Part of that was scheme, but he's a liability in that middle of the field at this point, and in coverage, sideline to sideline speed, which was one of his signatures, is gone.”
Drab actually pointed to a play against the Commanders to evidence that point.
“In the box, he's not gonna miss a tackle; he's gonna be phenomenal, and I know Quinn is great at moving his guys around and getting them in a position where they can best help, and what’s best for Wagner is not to be covering the running backs out of coverage,” Drab said. “One of the plays that was frustrating last year is the Gibson touchdown, when they tied up 19-19 in Seattle with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Wagner got smoked by Gibbie coming out of the backfield for about a 30-yard touchdown, and it was plays like that time and time again that were very frustrating to watch.”
Wagner will be 34 this season, and Drab knows ‘you can't beat father time,’ but on a one-year deal?
“It’s a one-year deal, let’s come in here and patch it, and he'll bring some leadership, he'll get a bunch of tackles,” Drab said, ‘but the tackle thing – the Seahawks played more snaps on defense than any team in the NFL last year and he was the middle linebacker, so of course he’s gonna have a lot of tackles. That doesn't mean that there's not significant problems in his game.”
