We know JP Finlay is our guy when it comes to Commanders news here on 106.7 The Fan, so as he and Brian Mitchell opened Wednesday's show, JP gave an update on the stat of the Commanders' GM interviews, which saw three take place Tuesday with two more scheduled for today, and how making that hire first and then getting the head coach is the 'right' way to do it.
BMitch, when discussing Jim Harbaugh as an idea, said all he cares about is "Ws and Ls," even though he knows Harbaugh brings baggage, and the necessary chain of command would be hard to manage – and right now, despite the optics, Washington isn't in that bad of a situation as they search.
"Normally what happens is a person goes to the worst franchise that doesn't have a lot of stuff going on, and then you go there and you don't really come out and do the things you're supposed to be doing, or you don't have the success you're supposed to, everybody says you suck," BMitch said. "But if you can wait because you know what you're about, and you see great situations and you take them, you probably have more success. You look at Washington, where they have a lot of cap space, the No. 2 pick and five in the Top 100 (plus No. 103), that's the way you can walk in and build up to great success."
Within that, there's a reason that chain of command needs to happen: it's because the GM needs to find a coach that can build a vision together, and together can get their era off on the right foot minutes into the 2024 Draft, especially given the flux at No. 1 with a team that is keeping its head coach but fired their offensive coordinator Wednesday.
"Whatever the Bears do, if they're not picking the quarterback, they about to get a lot of picks to get what they need to get to fix that team," BMitch said. "So, their GM is probably saying, 'I'm about to put myself in a great position.' He holds the cards, he's a joker right now."
"For everybody that wants to talk about trading back and how awesome that can be, the Bears pulled off the draft capital heist, and now have the first and ninth picks," JP replied. "But until you have the answers? They still don't know what they have in Fields or what they're going to do at No. 1 – so with Washington, whoever it is making the picks, identify who you want at No. 2 and take that person, and get the entire organization supporting that kid."
