Well before Sam Howell was traded to Seattle mid-afternoon, BMitch & Finlay were worried about the other end of the QB depth chart in DC, mainly who would be selected at No. 2.
But in reality, that entire segment seemed like a stump speech for Jayden Daniels.
"Pick a quarterback, preferably from about 20 miles from where I played and grew up; I grew up across the river from Baton Rouge, which is LSU," BMitch said. "I know what people are saying about this, and they're trying to make Jayden Daniels into a guy that only runs the ball when the guy was damn good in the pocket. I've heard a lot of commentators say that Drake Maye is very good at the pro stuff, but I am still waiting for one of them to tell me what the pro stuff is. When people throw out broad, bland stuff like that and they don't explain it, I'm wondering if they're just saying it as something that you have to push. I think the kid has done some good things, but if you look at the overall play, I don't want to hear that one guy is absolutely better than the other. But I just think in this league right now, if you have that extra weapon in your bag that you can use your legs like he does? I think someone has to tell him at this level here, you're no longer just a commodity, you are it, so you can't get hurt and you can't take unnecessary hits. Getting hit in the pocket happens, but once you run the football, you control that don't take unnecessary hits."
JP's stump:
"I think the top player available is Caleb Williams, and if something wacky happened that he was available at No. 2, that's a sprint to the podium situation. I don't think that happens, I think Chicago's taking Caleb, so at No. 2, you got to shoot your shot here with Daniels," he said. "For the first time in a really long time, you have the ability to have full organizational alignment between owner, GM, head coach and QB, and that's vital – and I think it's a playmaker league, and that kid can make plays. I think more and more the definition of winning from the pocket, and how QBs should be considered, has been changed by Patrick Mahomes. Things have evolved, and because of that, I lean Daniels. People want to talk about the improvement year-over-year, and yes, this year things really popped, but his accuracy has been there for three straight seasons."
