Are the Commanders trying to trade Chase Young? BMitch and Scott Jackson debate

It would seem that given the fifth-year option decision wasn’t due until a week or so after the NFL Draft that the time for the Commanders to trade Chase Young, if they wanted to, was before the Draft.

But, after he reportedly looked strong in minicamp this week, with all the praise heaped upon him by the team’s brass…are they looking to boost his stock now for a potential summer deal?

Albert Breer had written on Tuesday that he didn’t think the Commanders were shopping Young but could be taking calls, and that was enough for Brian Mitchell to speculate something of his own.

“Speculative articles like that, they just make you think he talked to somebody,” BMitch said.

“His Tweet the other day about how good Chase Young looked…he wasn’t even at camp!” Scott Jackson, in for JP Finlay, replied. “He’s been known to interview Ron Rivera quite a bit, so you wonder if it came from the boss?”

Jackson, who was at minicamp all three days, said Montez Sweat was in the backfield a lot during practices, but no one wrote about Sweat, so you wonder if something is going on.

“They’ve played a lot without him over the last several years, but the fact that it’s a must-win year, that would be a Hell of a move to make,” Scott said. “But on the other hand, if you get nothing for him?”

“If he plays great, I can see him not signing a franchise tag,” BMitch replied.

The Commanders need to figure out the futures of both Sweat and Young before next season, but the pending ownership change complicates that timeline, so there might not be much resolution soon.

“It would be nice if they were able to get something done with one of them like they did with Daron Payne,” Jackson said. “But they are in kind of a wait and see mode now with everything else, and I wonder if they get this sale done quick enough, if they can get one of these two knocked our prior to the season so you have a better idea of what the cap is.”

“Do they have enough to get both done?” BMitch replied. “At some point, you have to start investing in your offense.”
