Chase Young has a "stinger," according to the Washington Commanders, and hasn't seen the field since leaving the preseason opener – but per a report from Ben Standig Thursday, Young is "progressing but still not cleared for contact," and is uncertain for Week 1 pending a doctor's appointment in the next week.
That doesn't sound great, and on Thursday's show, JP Finlay told Brian Mitchell that something hasn't added up from the start.
"I'll tell you a couple things I noticed: that night, I think watching everyone leave the locker room, there was more conversation than normally befits a stinger," JP said. "A stinger, guys can come back and play in the same game, it doesn't usually cost you now three or four weeks."
Ron Rivera said last week Young had an appointment to get cleared for contact but has not answered questions on it since, so based on Standig's report, Finlay has a new theory.
"Based on information and understanding, I have a feeling this is a back thing more than a stinger," JP said.
"I'm not speculating…when they play Sunday, if he's on the field, cool, and if he's not, cool. Whoever replaces him, go make it happen," BMitch replied.
To JP, Chase Young has become "the new Kirk Cousins, with ardent supporters and significant detractors" (and he is somewhere in the middle), and this could be a check mark in the column of the latter.
"It seems to never end with Chase, and you feel bad for him," JP said. "Whatever happened, if he doesn't play Week 1, the detractors are going to have a field day. They say they have decisions to make this off-season with Young and Montez Sweat…but this decision might be easy."
"They may not have a decision to make, it may make itself the way things go," Bmitch cut in. "If they both have 14 sacks, then you have to make a decision, but if one doesn't play, the decision is made. I'm getting to the point where, as Doc always says, if you're not active, I don't care to talk about you anymore."
JP wonders if Young is already out for Week 1, because if he's not cleared now, he wouldn't be able to practice until next Wednesday, and there's not a lot of contact in practice, so his first experience with that would be game day.
BMitch wasn't so sure, but you can listen to their entire conversation above!
