Barstool Nate on Tuesday was just the latest in the Commanders’ realm to be comfortable anointing Sam Howell as the franchise QB of the future, even as Brian Mitchell continually said he needs to see more.
And it’s been eating at BMitch so much that on Wednesday, he just had to go off on a rant, wondering, what’s the hurry to do it?
“We talk a lot about Sam, and if you hear me, I'm cautious – and I can tell you that one of the reasons 7I'm cautious is that in this town, we rush to make someone the savior, and the moment they get there and make a mistake, we crush them,” Brian said. “So why don’t we let the guy grow into what he's going to be? Whether we say he's the guy today, tomorrow, or next year, would it make that big of a difference?”
Maybe, he thinks, only in the eyes of the court of public opinion, so it’d be better if he wasn’t.
“This is what I know about the fans and media when a guy becomes the guy: you are now crushed for the things that you were doing wrong yesterday that you do the same thing today,” Brian continued, likening it to getting a promotion at work and being held to a higher standard. “You’re now judged more harshly about the mediocre things you've done when you get a better position, so I don't have a problem being different than everybody else.”
Sam has shown BMitch he’s ‘a very good quarterback,’ and whether he’s ‘the guy’ or not, he’s going to ‘keep doing what he's been doing to try to get himself better.’
“So, what’s the rush for everybody to say he's the guy?” Brian asked. “Is that just what we do now in this age, where we gotta always talk about the same damn thing on a regular basis? I couldn’t care less to never answer that question ever again because he's a starting quarterback right now, isn't he?”
“If I asked all the columnists and writers if I give you a distinct yes or no, and I say yes today, are you going to stop writing these damn articles?” Brian said. “If I can get a yes, I’ll say yes, but deep down inside, I’m still gonna say, ‘keep improving, buddy.’”
