Cakes would 'roll the dice' and sign Chase Young to contract extension

Chase Young has had plenty of injury troubles early in his NFL career, leading to the Commanders declining his fifth-year option before the start of the season.

Because of that, Young could become a free agent after this season, but at this point, Cakes would “roll the dice” and extend Young to keep him in Washington long term.

“I’m gonna think long and hard about signing him, because if Sam Howell is your guy, you got a guy playing on a poverty salary at quarterback, which is every team’s dream,” Cakes said. “If Chase Young comes out and gives you a dozen sacks, you have to think about re-signing him. That has to be on the table.

“Yes, I sign him to a long-term deal. I roll the dice. You have a young pass rusher who hopefully hasn’t even really hit his prime yet. That’s the way you look at it.”

J.P. also thinks highly of Young, who matched his sack totals from the previous two seasons in Week 1 alone this year.

“Some people say, ‘The defense isn’t better with Chase Young.’ In my opinion, they would be worse if Chase Young is not out there,” J.P. said.
“He is actually pressuring the quarterback. That is not the problem. It’s not Chase Young. I understand he might take some plays off…but he’s actually pressuring the quarterback.”

As for EB, he is with Cakes, and would sign Young to an extension along with a few other moves on the defensive side.

“He’s gonna get paid. If he keeps up at this pace, he’s gonna get paid,” EB said. “He hasn’t nearly shown his potential at this level. I would try to bring him and Sweat back and get rid of Jack [Del Rio].”
