The Jon Allen era in DC could soon be over, as the Commanders have given Allen permission to seek a trade, according to multiple reports.
Allen, 30, was the then-Redskins’ first-round pick in 2017, and has played in 109 games over eight seasons, recording 401 tackles (60 for loss) 42 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception.
“It’s news, but it’s not surprising news to anyone,” Cakes said as the Junkies, who frequently hosted Allen in a weekly segment over the years, announced the breaking news. “A team that’s close would love to acquire Jonathan Allen for one year; he’s a leader at the peak of his career and a great dude, and if you’re a good defensive tackle away missing that piece on defense, you can do a lot worse than Jonathan Allen. It's smart business by the Commanders."
“It’s telling me that they were going to cut him, but if they can get something for him, they want to do that,” Bish added.
Allen missed nine games last year after tearing his pectoral muscle in October, but returned for the team’s playoff run, and ended up with three sacks and 19 tackles (seven for loss) in the regular season and six more tackles (one for loss) in the postseason.
He is entering in the final year of the four-year, $72 million extension he signed in 2021, but his $15.5 million base salary for 2025 is not guaranteed, so the Commanders could also cut him and only have the $6 million proration of his $30 million signing bonus as dead cap in 2025.
Per Ian Rapoport, the Commanders ‘plan to do right by the player & Allen’s camp is involved in helping him land at the right spot, whether that be in trade or free agency.’
