JP Finlay knows he is likely in the minority, but he says the Commanders should pick up Chase Young’s fifth-year option, regardless of the 23-year-old’s problems staying healthy.
“I get all the reasons to not pick up the option,” Finlay said. “The island I live on is, I think they should pick up Chase Young’s fifth-year option.
“You pick up the option, it’ll cost you about $17 million in two years…at some point, you have to bet on the talent, the potential, the athleticism, all the reasons you drafted this guy No. 2 overall.”
Young was seen as Washington’s next prolific pass rusher, but since his rookie Pro Bowl season, he has played in just 15 games, including only three last season. the team is now saying publicly that a potential ownership change is putting off discussions about making a decision on Young’s option, but Finlay says that isn’t true, and the team should pick it up.
“Let’s clarify something,” Finlay said. “Ron Rivera, during the owners meetings, said he needs to wait for a new owner to help him decide on what he wants to do with Chase Young’s fifth-year option. That ain’t true. They just paid Daron Payne $90 million.
“When it comes to Chase Young, they’re using that as a crutch because they’re unsure of the decision they’re going to make, but they have about five weeks to make a decision.”
