The William Jackson III era in Washington is officially coming to an end.
The Washington Commanders are expected to finalize a trade that will send the defensive back to the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the NFL's 4 p.m. trade deadline, per multiple reports.

The Commanders had been looking to trade Jackson before the deadline and it was reported early Tuesday they would release him if a trade could not be struck. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport was the first to report a trade was nearing completion.
What Washington is receiving in the deal has not yet been reported as the deal is nearing completion. NFL Media's Tom Pelissero reported the teams are 'expected to swap late-round future picks in the trade."
The deal will cost the Commanders $3 million in dead money in 2023, 2024, and 2025 from Jackson’s prorated bonus, but they will ultimately save $12.75 million next year, according to Over the Cap.
Jackson, who signed with Washington ahead of the 2021 season on a 3-year, $46 million deal, has not played in the Commanders' last three games, all wins, since he was benched early on in the Week 5 loss to the Titans.
After the game, there were conflicting stories between Jackson and head coach Ron Rivera as to whether the team's highest-paid defender was benched or left the game due to an injury. He ultimately missed time due to an injury but never played another down for the team.
After the Titans game, it was reported Jackson wanted a change of scenery, but the player later denied he had requested the team to trade him.
In parts of two seasons with the franchise, Jackson played 16 games and tallied two interceptions, 10 pass deflections, and made 55 tackles.
