The Sam Howell era is indeed over in DC.
Per Adam Schefter, and confirmed by Ben Standig, the Commanders are dealing Sam Howell to Seattle, along with two 2024 draft picks, for two higher 2024 selections.
According to the report, Seattle is getting a fourth-round pick (No. 102 overall) and a sixth (No. 179) and sending back to Washington a third (No. 78) and a fifth (No. 152) – a move that takes the Commanders from having six picks in the Top 102 to six in the Top 100, and now their next two selections after that are only 13 apart (their own fifth at 139 and Seattle’s at 152).
Howell was, of course, Washington’s fifth-round pick in 2022 and started all 17 games for the Commanders in 2023, completing 63.4 percent of his passes (on a league-high 612 attempts) for 3,946 yards, but he had a 1:1 TD:INT ratio (21 to 21, the INT rate also an NFL high) and was sacked 65 times.
He now heads to Seattle, where he will join a room with Geno Smith after Drew Lock left for the Giants in free agency.
Washington signed Marcus Mariota this week, and this move all but confirms they’ll be sticking at the No. 2 selection in the draft to select a QB.
