Fred Smoot always wanted to be the ‘first Fred Smoot,’ but one thing he also was in his career was one of the few (it seems) people who had a good relationship with Daniel Snyder.
“We all have different relationships with people, and it’s all in the perspective of how you get to know them,” Smoot told Grant & Danny on Monday. “I’ve been to the house in Maryland, it was fun and the food was great, but when I went to the bathroom, it showed me I was still broke because it had luxuries that I’ve never seen before, and there was a dude in the bathroom like the dude in the club!”
The latter quote was said loudly with tongue firmly in Smoot’s cheek, and G&D had to laugh with him, but the first part was true: Smoot indeed had a good relationship with Snyder – and said there was no real issue in the locker room because Snyder had certain relationships with certain people.
“It’s just like a family – I have a group of family I chill with and a group I run from,” Smoot said. “Some guys don’t care, they just want to do their job and go home, so it’s more about the players’ approach. I don’t think it had an effect on the locker room who he chose. Quarterbacks get more attention as it is, and everything in this world has politics in it.”
In Smoot’s eyes, the big problem with Snyder is that the DC fan base never got to see the real him.
“The one thing Dan has is bad people skills – and it’s not so much bad, it’s that he’s actually quiet and shy until he gets around football players, because that’s his bubble where he can be Dan,” Smoot said. “I’ve told him he should let the people in DC get to know that Dan, because it’s a different person, and having a bad relationship with the city doesn’t work well when you aren’t winning.”
Alas, it never happened and now Snyder is all but gone, and Smoot understands why everyone is so galvanized by the entire process.
“It’s one of those things that when there’s a combination of on-field struggles, people not liking the stadium and the process…you have to ask, what do you like?” Smoot said. “Now people are going to be excited about the future and what the team can be. Look at DC Defenders games – the fans can be there, and I don’t think the fans care who the next owner is, they just want to turn the page.”
