Brad Spielberger joined Grant & Danny on the eve of Commanders training camp, and wanted to focus heavily on two specific Commanders players, one on each side of the ball.
As you might expect, the offensive player was Sam Howell, whom Spielberger called “interesting” and someone we have to start taking seriously.
“It’s weird that a guy’s stock goes up or down and we swing with the reaction,” Spielberger said. “He went from being projected as a top pick in his penultimate college season to a fifth-rounder after a tough season at UNC where he lost a lot of players, and things went on with COVID – but we can’t say that he can’t become a first round-caliber quarterback again; he’s a good athlete, he has a strong arm for his size, and we’re going to see Eric Bieniemy weaponize those legs.”
And, even though he has all of one NFL game to go on, if the staff can be believed, then it’s time to believe in Sam Howell.
“We’ve seen so little at the NFL level, but there’s definitely some positivity coming out of there. He looks good and they believe in him,” Spielberger said. “I’ll admit I was skeptical, but as time goes on, it’s kind of a steady drum beat. Jacoby Brissett is a good NFL quarterback, but if they feel that way and they’re seeing it, I feel we have to start believing them at a certain point.”
