Did the Washington Commanders get a gift from the Chicago Bears on Wednesday?
The Bears announced they are keeping Matt Eberflus as head coach but fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy…which means that quarterback may not be their focus, and another quality job option is not going to be open.
“Let’s hear it for the Bears! Continuity, really smart…and I think you should keep Justin Fields and pick an offensive tackle at No. 1,” Grant Paulsen said. “To the Bears’ credit, they did play very well down the stretch, and Eberflus is a very good defensive coach, so now they’ve blown out their offensive staff, and just by starting this way…hugely important and good news for the Commanders, because the Bears would’ve been a good job, and in a cycle where there are quite a few great names available, they’ve decided they have their guy.”
“This is not the course I would take, but good for them. They have picks 1 and 9, and a lot of salary cap space, and maybe an asset in Fields you could get something good for, so that’s a really good situation,” Danny replied. “But Matt Eberflus is in it, so that means another quality candidate isn’t going go there.”
So you have the coach, but do you have the QB? And if so, who’s working with him?
“If they’re keeping Justin Fields, this is a gotta have it season where his career is on the line…and look no further than Washington or this,” Grant said. “If they don’t offer Eberflus an extension, and he’s in a contract year, now you have to go out and try to lure one of the good offensive coordinators to come in and work with Justin Fields, who I would say is viewed very differently depending on who you talk to. Between that and the fact that it’s a lame-duck staff…how did that work out for Eric Bieniemy here?”
“I’m almost to the point where they will keep Fields now because they kept Eberflus,” Danny said. “Doing one or the other is almost like going halfway to try to improve.”
Definitely a weird situation, and you can listen to G&D’s entire convo about it above!
