Jeremy Chinn was a Commanders captain Sunday as they hosted his former team, the Panthers, and while he only had six tackles, that’s because the entire defense was buzzing in holding Carolina to just one score in a 40-7 blowout.
Chinn’s only regret? The seven was too much, or so it was when he found out from Grant Paulsen after the game that Washington hasn’t recorded a shutout since 1991.
“Man, I feel like seven was too many, to be honest with you,” Chinn laughed. “It was great game planning, so we just went out there and executed. We felt good going into it; we do a great job of preparing throughout the week so we can come in on Sundays and just have fun and be confident. We didn’t know it had been since ’91, but when they finished the first half with zero, we were like, ‘we need to finish this thing.’ We're chasing perfection; that's how we come out here and approach it. Unfortunately, they did score, but it was a great game all-around.”
And a great result for a game Chinn was looking forward to against his old mates.
“It’s always good when you can go back and play your former team and get a W, and have a great game,” Chinn said. “That was definitely added motivation and it was just a good feeling.”
And great that the team lost their No. 2 overall pick at quarterback but didn’t miss a beat with Marcus Mariota, putting up 40 on the Panthers.
“We have the utmost confidence in everybody in this locker room. Whoever it may be in any position, we believe that people will step up and win and do what they need to do and execute their job,” Chinn said. “That’s just the way that we’ve worked from day one in training camp all the way to this point. We'll just continue to get better.”
