You surely know by now about the controversy that may or may not be surrounding the Commanders for potential tampering based on interest they seem to have had in Andrew Luck, who had been retired for three years at that point, when they were looking for a QB last offseason.
A situation that could’ve, and should’ve, been ‘a big nothing-burger’ to Grant Paulsen.
“This doesn’t seem overly interesting, except you’re not allowed to do that. Now, if they called the Colts before they traded for Carson Wentz and asked if they could trade for Andrew Luck, that’s a big nothing-burger,” Grant said, “but if they called him and asked him if he wanted to play, that’s tampering – but no one would care so much about this if Jim Irsay didn’t Tweet about it.”
“There’s an important distinction there, because we know the Colts and Commanders spoke based on a trade for Carson Wentz,” Danny Rouhier replied. “If they reached out privately, that’s an easily-controllable stupid mistake that is comically stupid amateur hour stuff. And, now that an owner has made a public comment, you’d think they’d investigate it.”
Grant believes that Ron Rivera and the Martys “are football lifers who have been around the block and know enough to have been cautious enough about this,” so it will eventually be “much ado about nothing.
But if he’s wrong?
“That would be the ultimate final act of the Dan Snyder tenure if new owners and a new front office are gifted a draft with one less pick on the board,” Grant said.
And here’s the thing: don’t assume Rivera, Mayhew, and Hurney actually would know better, as one caller warned when he referenced the ‘we could be eliminated’ snafu.
“That is a scary thought, actually,” Grant said, before Danny referenced the Miami Dolphins losing two picks for potential Tom Brady tampering. “This would be the perfect way for the Dan Snyder era to exit stage left.”
Even if, at least to Grant, there’s a threshold where losing a draft pick really isn’t really worth caring about.
“If they lose anything, it is unforgivably stupid, but if it’s a seven? Still stupid, but I don’t really care that much,” Grant said. “The threshold for me being livid and never forgiving is higher than a five. If you lose a fourth-round pick or higher, I will talk about it more than the time they traded up for a long snapper.”
