During Friday’s show, Grant & Danny were looking ahead to Friday night’s Nationals-Tigers game and Jake Irvin’s fourth MLB start, which led to remembering Max Scherzer as a National striking out 20 Tigers – including Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez three times each – back in 2016.
When Danny revealed that the Nats’ leadoff hitter in that game was Ben Revere, we got a retelling of a great story: the time Revere once rode in the back of Grant Paulsen’s car.
See, GP has been buddies with now-Orioles pitcher Kyle Gibson since both guys were in college, but when Gibson was in Double-A and came down to Bowie for a game, Grant went to pick him up at the team hotel in his 2001 Toyota Celica…and Gibson brought a friend.
“I go pick him up to go to dinner and catch up, and he comes walking out with another guy, and says, ‘Hey, I hope you don’t mind, Ben wanted to come along too,’” Grant said. “I was like, ‘wow, Ben Revere, you were a first-round pick last year! I’m steamed up right now!’”
The problem? Said Celica was not exactly conducive to more than one passenger.
“I have a friend who is 5-foot-8 who hated sitting in the back seat,” Grant said. “Luckily, Revere is about the same height, but if I had known, I’d have rented a car for the experience!”
Grant has told Revere the story since, but then Danny wanted to know why baseball players lie about their height, and that led to a story of how Grant & Danny and JP from the Junkies had to do a Nationals ticket-holder event that Mr. Flaim put a nice wet blanket on...that's one for another day, but take a listen to Grant’s, at least, above!
