JP Finlay believes, as Nicki Jhbavala had also intimated, that Bob Myers’ role with the Commanders may be more than just being part of the search committee for Josh Harris to find and interview candidates for the next head of football ops.
Yes, Myers is a basketball guy, but Xs and Os of football operations aren’t necessarily going to his wheelhouse – he may be more involved in the business end of things, and being a sounding board for how to build proper structures and initiatives.
One other way Myers could help, it seems, is something Nicki Jhabvala mentioned to JP earlier in the day: Myers has a history with 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters, who is seemingly the leader in clubhouse for the Commanders’ top job (both them wanting him and maybe him wanting to come here).
Peters was set to interview for the gig at Josh Harris’ home on Tuesday evening, and as JP posited, when it comes to business deals, a dinner meeting has to be better than the lunch meeting, right?
“Some of this may just be pure logistics, when the plane arrives or where you’re traveling from, but in general, if you’re going on a date, you’ve got a much better chance if you’re meeting for dinner,” Finlay said. “I think that bodes well for Adam Peters. If it’s the evening, you know, you could talk for five hours.”
JP didn’t want to re-live the stories of Dan Snyder having people spend days at his house, but the fact that Peters is taking a lengthy cross-country flight is encouraging.
“You don't take that flight without thinking I would take this job,” JP said. “Maybe he just wants a free trip to Miami, although I think it is raining there now so maybe this wouldn't be the best time to visit, and maybe that’s impacting his flight. Who knows – all we know is he’s had three teams request interviews and he’s only taken one, and he has a well-documented relationship with Myers.”
And, well, there’s also the guy who is bringing him in, too…
“The book on Josh Harris, NFL owner is too short to derive a lot of answers from, but there’s another book on him as an owner in the NHL and NBA, and the reviews are solid,” JP said. “He takes care of his guys, he pays well, and has nice facilities, and the word is strong. Maybe if you’re Adam Peters, you don’t want to leave, because you’re a Bay Area native and maybe they move John Lynch up, but the Commanders’ job is a legit, good job.”
Take a listen to all of JP’s conjectures above!
