JUNKIES: Doc Walker says Bieniemy Effect is real - and the Commanders' D is benefitting, too

A victory a Sunday does NOT keep the Doc away, because our man Rick Walker had to join the Junkies on Tuesday morning to bark about the Commanders’ comeback win in Denver – and his prescription for fixing the Commanders’ traditionally poor starts seems to be more than a placebo.

“Usually, we are terrible in September, and it’s been a theme – so if you know what you are, correct it,” Doc said. “We saw what it took to correct it, and it’s simply by amping things up; the Bieniemy effect is a rollover, because if the offense is going fast, the defense has to keep up with it in practice, and thus, you have more energy.”

EB thinks that “Bieniemy Effect” was more visible in Denver than it was in Week 1, as his play calls and in-game adjustments spurred a comeback from a 21-3 deficit that in the past may have never happened.

“All of us now feel more cofortabe – although it’s not what we want, you can see it, and it’s a progression,” Walker said. “If we were down by 15 or 20 points, we’d all be out of it, but now, they’ve proved as a unit thy have that moxie, and there’s something a little different. It’s not all on one guy, but you can tell there’s something different about this group.”

Something different on defense, too, where Chase Young returned and made an immediate impact – and if he can keep going and get even better, this group has a chance to be not just elite, but legendary.

“Last week I said I’m not worried about him – you can’t play with a neck injury, and as soon as he’s healthy, he’ll be fine, but that’s not good enough for what we expect,” Doc said. “He’s that talented where he can come out and do that in a nap; what we’re looking for is him being the predator we’ve seen, one of those freaks. If we have that, combined with the rest of that group, now we can start earning a legitimate nickname like the Fearsome Foursome, Steel Curtain, or Purple People Eaters.”

It’s not just Young and Montez Sweat, either, because everyone is chipping in.

“They have depth. It’s a gang of guys!” Doc said. “If they can get the contributions from other guys – the linebackers made the biggest play of the game – and once they all figure it out and get it together, they will have the last laugh. What separates the NFL from everything else is these freaks; only a few exist, and we’ve got a couple of ‘em. With these lingerie training camps everyone is running, September sucks; people who understand the game are throwing up in their mouth. If they keep moving in this direction…we’ve all stunk and won, but I’d rather have questions and win than play my butt off and lose. This shapes us, and with the energy in this town right now, it’s unimaginable how crazy FedEx will be.”
