JUNKIES: John Feinstein on Jack Del Rio's firing, Commanders' future searches

It’s another Feinstein Friday for the Junkies, and on the first day of December, the big topic for John was Ron Rivera firing Jack Del Rio, and Josh Harris’ comments about evaluating everything after the season.

“Teams do this, to sort of hold off the public when a team is doing poorly, but I don’t think Josh Harris wants to make a Dan Snyder move and fire Ron Rivera before the season is over, so I think firing Del Rio is an empty gesture,” John said. “I’m not a Del Rio fan and the defense has played poorly, but they’re not going to go from 4-8 to 9- because they fired Del Rio. But, they had to do something, and Del Rio was an obvious candidate. Not really gonna change things, and we’ve all been right that Harris is going to clean house at the end of the season – but he was very careful in his interview with Nicki Jhabvala to not say anything, which says to me he’s made up his mind, he just doesn’t know who he’s going to hire.”

Feinstein is a fan of the idea of Eric Bieniemy, so that’s one thought for head coach, but what about a GM search?

“That’s a good question,” Feinstein said. “I always thought they should’ve given the job to Doug Williams years ago; he’s a good personnel guy and knows the quarterback position well, but he’s now in his mid-60s so they probably won’t hire someone his age. I would think hiring a younger guy is the move, and you want to look at teams with young execs that have drafted well. Eric DeCosta was a perfect example of that in Baltimore.”

Take a listen to John’s entire call-in, which includes thoughts on what’s going wrong in New England (and what it means for Bill Belichick’s future), the final weekend of college football, and more!
