JUNKIES: Where would Sam Howell rank among the QB class of 2023?

The Commanders have decided to cast their lot with Sam Howell, a fifth-round pick last year who probably could've been a first-round pick had he come out a year earlier.

But, had he come out a year later, how would he compare to the group of quarterbacks in this year's draft? Howell has a year in the offense, which is slightly mitigated by a new coordinator, and he has one game of NFL experience, so it's pretty much all a wash.

So where would Howell fall in the Class of 2023?

"It certainly would depend on what kind of year he had – if he had the same year as his junior year at North Carolina, he's behind the top four," Bish said. "If he had the year he had as a sophomore, then he'd be a lot higher."

"He's below the top four," EB agreed, "but not sure if he's behind Hendon Hooker."

Mel Kiper, perhaps the preeminent draft expert, gave Howell a second-round grade in the range with Hooker but above everyone else.

"So maybe sixth in the class?" Bish asked.

"I think that Howell ranks favorably over all those guys," EB added, alluding to his breakdown elsewhere in the show of 'diamond in the rough' quarterbacks.
