Prominent NFL analyst Warren Sharp released his 2023 quarterback room rankings on Wednesday, and the Commanders are ranked dead last.
Per Sharps’ list, the rankings are “based on average ranks of positional unit,” and that clearly didn’t favor Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett.
Grant and Danny think ranking the Commanders that low is a stretch, though they likely wouldn’t put that QB room much higher.
“To me,” Grant said. “That is a bit crazy.”
So, looking at the teams directly above the Commanders, Grant and Danny weighed Howell and Brissett against the competition, starting with the second-to-last Buccaneers.
“Would you trade, at this second, Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett for Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask? Absolutely not, right?” Grant said. “If you asked 32 GMs…which two do you want, don’t you think more NFL GMs right now would pick Howell and his arrow trending up upside, with Brissett, who has proven he can play, over Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask?
“Next one is the Falcons at third,” Grant continued. “You have to choose between Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke over Howell and Brissett…I do think I like Howell more than Ridder, and I know I like Brissett over Heinicke.
“It’s fair to say it’s a tiny sample, but I think Howell’s one game was better than what the Ridder sample over more games was. Did Ridder flash more in one game than what Howell did in his one game?”
Next up is the Packers, where Jordan Love is slated to replace Aaron Rodgers, and Danny is not expecting another Hall of Famer to take the reins in Green Bay.
“Give me Washington’s [QB room],” Danny said. “I am out on Jordan Love…what I saw was wholly unimpressive to me.”
Both Grant and Danny stopped at the Titans at 28, declining to put Howell and Brissett over Ryan Tannehill, despite his recent decline. So, while they don’t believe the Commanders have the worst quarterbacks in the league, they are still in the bottom four, which isn’t optimal.
