A first move for the Commanders to shore up a depleted defensive line: per reports, Washington is signing veteran defensive tackle Carl Davis to the practice squad.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo first reported the news, later confirmed by Ben Standig, after Davis worked out for the team earlier Tuesday.
Davis, 32, split last year between the Seahawks and Cowboys practice squads and was active in three games for Dallas, so he reunites with Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt in DC. Originally a third-round pick of the Ravens in 2015, he has 68 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three passes defensed in 75 career games with the Ravens, Browns, Colts, Jaguars, Patriots, and Cowboys.
The addition of Davis gives the Commanders a veteran presence on the practice squad as they try to navigate the loss of Jonathan Allen for the season with a torn pec.
Daron Payne, Phidarian Mathis, and rookie Johnny Newton are the only three healthy DT on the active roster, and on the practice squad they also have Haggai Nduibiusi, a former player from the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program who switched from offensive to defensive tackle in 2023 and has spent time in camps with the Broncos, Seahawks, and UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas.
