At times Washington looked to be on the verge of a breakthrough on offense Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. But then things fell just short and the offense couldn’t get the final piece of the puzzle in a 31-17 defeat.
For the second-straight week, Scott Turner’s offense had more plays than the opposition, but both came in losing efforts. And the play chart is skewed by Washington’s 17-play drive in the 2nd half which netted them zero points on a turnover on downs.
Jack Del Rio’s unit on the defensive side forced two interceptions (one from last year’s MVP Lamar Jackson and old friend Robert Griffin III), but they allowed 8.6 yards per Baltimore attempt and big plays on the ground and through the air that kept them out of the game.
Here is who played and who didn’t in Washington Football Team’s Week 4 defeat:
Offense: 71 total plays
Quarterback and Offensive Line:
Dwayne Haskins - 71 (100%)
Geron Christian Sr. - 71 (100%)
Wes Schweitzer - 71 (100%)
Wes Martin - 71 (100%)
Chase Roullier - 71 (100%)
Morgan Moses - 71 (100%)
David Sharpe - 2 (3%)
Haskins had his best statistical game and didn’t turn over the ball against a Baltimore defense that was near the top of that category a year ago. However, he was sacked three times and while the offensive line should take the blame for one of those sacks (a blown blocking assignment in the game’s first drive), the quarterback took two terrible sacks at bad times. (And then his agent spoke up after the game.)
Running Backs:
J.D. McKissic - 39 (55%)
Antonio Gibson - 31 (44%)
Peyton Barber - 5 (7%)
Welcome to the NFL, Antonio Gibson! The screen pass was there and Gibson took two for 18 and 40 yards, respectively. And McKissic grabbed seven catches for 40 yards. But on the ground, Gibson averaged just 3.5 yards on 13 carries, and McKissic and Barber had near-nonexistent days: two carries for six yards and three carries for five yards. Ouch.
Wide Receivers:
Terry McLaurin - 64 (90%)
Isaiah Wright - 58 (82%)
Dontrelle Inman - 57 (80%)
Antonio Gandy-Golden - 12 (17%)
Cam Sims - 4 (6%)
McLaurin is the class of this group and shows it every week: 10 receptions for 118 yards on 14 targets. It is evident he is the receiver Haskins’ trusts when looking longer than a few yards down the field. Inman and Wright both caught four passes, but for a combined 69 yards. With Steven Sims Jr. inactive, neither Cam Sims nor Gandy-Golden took advantage of extra opportunity to play.
Tight Ends:
Logan Thomas - 66 (93%)
Marcus Baugh - 9 (13%)
Jeremy Sprinkle - 8 (11%)
Washington got nothing from this unit offensively Sunday vs. Baltimore. Just four targets for Thomas resulting in an eight-yard completion. Washington will, again, be looking for tight end help in the offseason.
Defense: 57 total plays
Defensive Line:
DaRon Payne - 47 (84%)
Jon Allen - 45 (79%)
Ryan Kerrigan - 29 (51%)
Ryan Anderson - 29 (51%)
Montez Sweat - 27 (47%)
Nate Orchard - 26 (46%)
Tim Settle - 22 (39%)
James Smith-Williams - 12 (21%)
Missing Chase Young (inactive, groin) and Matt Ioannidis (IR with biceps injury) neither Kerrigan nor Anderson or Sweat saw an uptick in their snaps. The edge rushers saw some of their lower totals on the season. And the stats show it: Just two tackles for those three. Nate Orchard made his first appearance for the team and he made two tackles by himself. This defensive line unit is not the same without Young and it shows, even after three games of his rookie season.
Linebackers:
Jon Bostic - 67 (100%)
Kevin Pierre-Louis - 48 (84%)
Shawn Dion Hamilton - 16 (28%)
Thomas Davis Sr. - 8 (14%)
Bostic again the iron man for this defense and he led the team with 14 tackles. But this unit didn’t have an impact on the game and had some missed plays on runs and passes that will hurt when watched again on tape. But, take away a 50-yard Lamar Jackson TD run and this unit held up decently on run plays.
Secondary:
S Troy Apke - 57 (100%)
S Landon Collins - 57 (100%)
CB Kendall Fuller - 57 (100%)
CB Ronald Darby - 56 (98%)
S Kamren Curl - 24 (42%)
CB Jimmy Moreland - 9 (16%)
S Deshazor Everett - 1 (2%)
Kendall Fuller had two picks in the game and the first one was a fantastic play along the sideline to set up Washington with a field goal before the half. Curl has emerged as the fifth defensive back, Moreland, who was seeing a lot of the field in the early season when Fuller was out due to injury, has taken a backseat.
