One position group with the potential to cause Dwayne Haskins fits as he develops as a passer in his second NFL season is his wide receivers.
They’re so inexperienced, it prompted beat reporter Michael Phillips to remark that they’re not “an NFL caliber wide receiver group” in a Wednesday appearance with 106.7 The Fan’s Chad Dukes.
“On the whole, I continue to stick with my initial assessment of this wide receiver group: they’re just not good enough, Chad,” Phillips said. “This is not an NFL caliber wide receiver group.”
“They make good plays sometimes,” he continued. “They all seem like very nice guys who work very hard. I think it is a unit where they definitely need upgrading in the future to be a contender.”
Washington WRs: Antonio Gandy-Golden, Dontrelle Inman, Johnathon Johnson, Darvin Kidsy Jr., Terry McLaurin, Trey Quinn, Cam Sims, Steven Sims Jr., Jordan Veasy, Jester Weah, Isaiah Wright
Out of the entire group, there’s one receiver with more than two seasons of experience under his belt and that’s Inman. That makes Quinn and Cam Sims the next most-tenured veterans of the group.
Phillips did have kind remarks for fourth-round pick Antonio Gandy-Golden, who he says has done some good fundamentals in the first few days of training camp open to assembled media.
“I think Gandy-Golden stood out to me for his blocking,” he said. “I’ve really appreciated, he gets downfield if it’s a run play. He’s in the right place with the right technique. He’s clearing people out of the way. I like to see that out of a wide receiver.”
“You know, that’s an important part of the game, too, and not just on running plays, either,” he said. “There’s gonna be a lot of jet sweeps or side-to-side screen passes, whatever it is. That’s an important thing to have on the field, a wide receiver who can throw a block, maybe spring a guy. So I think he really stood out from that perspective. I think he’ll probably find his way onto the field.”
