Washington Snap Count vs. Giants: Change in the secondary, O-line

Another week, another defeat for Ron Rivera’s Washington Football Team.

The tale of the tape: They were closer than they had been all year. But they ended up two yards short of victory when Kyle Allen’s pass attempt on the two-point conversion was incomplete.

For Scott Turner’s offense, there was an improvement from the defeat in the rain to the Los Angeles Rams, they had 24 first downs, went 8-15 on 3rd down and 2-2 on 4th down. And tallied 337 yards of total offense on eight drives. But they scored only 19 points and turned the ball over twice.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jack Del Rio’s unit allowed just 13 points and held the New York Giants to just 240 yards of total offense and 108 yards in the air. The issue: Not enough big plays to keep the Giants off the field and give Washington’s lackluster offense a short field.

Here is the tale of the tape on who played and who didn’t from Week 6:

Offense: 73 total plays
Quarterback and Offensive Line:
Kyle Allen - 73 (100%)
Geron Christian Sr. - 73 (100%)
Saahdiq Charles - 2 (3%)
Chase Roullier - 73 (100%)
Brandon Scherff - 73 (100%)
Morgan Moses - 73 (100%)
Wes Schweitzer - 71 (97%)

The quarterback had some good plays and some downright ugly ones. It was a rough day for Allen, committing two horrible turnovers. The protection was decent, but this offensive line is not giving the running backs much of a chance: 21 carries produced just 77 yards (3.67 average). This was supposed to be the debut of Saahdiq Charles, unfortunately, he left after two plays due to injury. Washington did get Brandon Scherff back after he left the Week 2 defeat with an injury. Wes Martin did not feature. Dwayne Haskins was inactive but was with the team.

Running Backs:
J.D. McKissic - 39 (53%)
Antonio Gibson - 27 (37%)
Peyton Barber - 8 (11%)

There wasn’t much room for the running backs on the ground, but they are becoming a real threat in the passing game. McKissic caught all six passes in his direction for 43 yards and Gibson caught four passes for 25.

Wide Receivers:
Terry McLaurin - 70 (96%)
Dontrelle Inman - 66 (90%)
Isaiah Wright - 57 (78%)
Cam Sims - 7 (10%)
Antonio Gandy-Golden - 7 (10%)

McLaurin was targeted 12 times and hauled in seven catches for 74 yards. He remains the only real threat and is head and shoulders above every other person on Washington’s offense. Inman has emerged as WFT’s second-best WR and Cam Sims caught his first career touchdown late. Antonio Gandy-Golden left during the first half with an injury and was unable to return.

Tight Ends:
Logan Thomas - 63 (86%)
Jeremy Sprinkle - 11 (15%)
Temarrick Hemingway - 10 (14%)

Logan Thomas is still the only threat from this bunch in the passing game and made a very nice touchdown catch in the first half, totaling 42 yards on three receptions. Marcus Baugh was inactive for the second-straight week.

Defense: 48 total plays
Defensive Line:
Daron Payne - 45 (94%)
Chase Young - 44 (92%)
Montez Sweat - 38 (79%)
Jon Allen - 38 (79%)
Tim Settle - 16 (33%)
Ryan Kerrigan - 7 (15%)
Ryan Anderson - 6 (13%)
James Smith-Williams - 1 (2%)

The defensive line rebounded from a lackluster performance against the Rams. Ryan Kerrigan played just seven snaps, his lowest in some time, but he had a big sack on a third down. Young, Sweat, Allen, and Payne all made tackles for loss. And Young pressured the quarterback into an interception. Nate Orchard was inactive after playing the last few weeks.

Linebackers:
Jon Bostic - 48 (100%)
Kevin Pierre-Louis - 34 (71%)
Cole Holcomb - 31 (65%)
Shaun Dion Hamilton - 1 (2%)

Back from injury Cole Holcomb led the team with six tackles and added a tackle for loss. But this unit was generally not too involved in proceedings. Thomas Davis Sr. was a healthy scratch.

Secondary:
S Landon Collins - 48 (100%)
CB Kendall Fuller - 48 (100%)
S Deshazor Everett - 46 (96%)
CB Ronald Darby - 36 (75%)
CB Jimmy Moreland - 27 (56%)
CB Fabian Moreau - 13 (27%)
S Kamren Curl - 2 (4%)

The big change: Troy Apke was benched in favor of Everett. The result? Giants QB Daniel Jones threw for just 112 yards, but he ran for 74 and embarrassed the other safety, Landon Collins, on a 49 yard scamper. There were also several missed tackles by this unit. Fabian Moreau returned to action for the first time since Week 2 and was burned on a touchdown pass in the first half. Of course, Kendall Fuller (who played safety on a few snaps) had yet another interception, and it came in a key spot.
