Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard, citing injuries suffered throughout the season, gave Washington an incomplete grade for the year.
Grant and Danny weren’t having it.
“I love Tommy Sheppard, I think he’s one of the nicest dudes in the world,” Grant said. “That answer bothers me so badly. I hate that answer. First of all, you don’t get an incomplete on high school if you were the Wizards. You get an F. This season was an F, let’s just make no bones about it. You either make the playoffs and go achieve, or you take a step back and get a draft pick and get better. They had the exact same record as the season before. In fact, they’ve basically been the same team for the last three years.
“They were one of the few teams in the NBA that tried to make the playoffs and didn’t. It’s pretty stunning, and it’s hard to do. Ten teams are one, and 20 are still playing, and the Wizards somehow, despite trying to play until the last two weeks or so, weren’t one of those teams.”
Citing the Wizards’ lack of success on the floor when even two of their big three of Bradley Beal, Kyle Kuzma, and Kristaps Porzingis played together, an incomplete grade would be overlooking the fact that even when healthy, the roster as constructed didn’t succeed.
“This season was a failure,” Grant said. “There’s no way to say that this was injury related. You have no good records with any iteration of two out of those three guys on the floor.”
