The 2023 high school football season is fast approaching. As is always the case this time of year, there is anticipation. Who will be the players, teams, and stories we will be buzzing about and focusing on? Who from this area may be hoisting a state championship trophy later this year?

Last year, we celebrated a trio of state champs from this area. Highland Springs won the VHSL Class 5 title beating Maury 33-19 to complete a perfect 15-0. It was the 5th state championship since 2015 under coach Loren Johnson. Dinwiddie was also 15-0 and claimed the VHSL Class 4 title, pounding Kettle Run 65-20 in the final. Finally, Trinity Episcopal finished taking the VISAA Division 1 state title for the second year in row. The Titans dominated all season long including a 35-0 win over Benedictine in the state final.

This will be 30th season of high school football on Sports Radio 910 The Fan. Gary Hess has handled Game of the Week play-by-play duties since 1993 and is now considered “The Voice of High School Football” in RVA. Gary has been on the call for 15 state championship wins by local schools. This will be the 15th year he will be joined in the booth by coach Gary Criswell. Gary played locally and coached here on the high school and college level.

Announcements on the early season schedule will be made in the coming days.
