Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills' training staff will be honored at the 2023 ESPY Awards, receiving the "Pat Tillman Award for Service" in their lifesaving treatment of safety Damar Hamlin.
Hamlin collapsed to the turf of Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati during a "Monday Night Football" matchup with the Bengals on Jan. 2, 2023. He went into cardiac arrest shortly after making, what appeared to be, a routine tackle of Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins in the first quarter.
The second-year safety was administered CPR on the field, while also requiring the use of an AED before being transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he spent just one week recovering in the ICU.
LISTEN LIVE TO WGR:
Hamlin is expected to make his NFL comeback this upcoming season after he was medically cleared to fully return to football activities earlier this offseason.
The Pat Tillman Award for Service is given annually to a group with a strong connection who has served others like former NFL safety and U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman.
Tillman played four seasons in the NFL after he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the seventh round (226th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft.
It was in 2002 when Tillman went on to enlist in the U.S. Army and join the Army Rangers. He fought and served in Afghanistan, where he was unfortunately killed in April 2004.
The 2023 ESPY Awards will be held on Wednesday, July 12.
